Ironworkers working on the last lift of Bent 4L column




The is one of the Piers for the new Bay Bridge Project,

the Pier is approximately 170 feet tall


In the foreground is a pier for the new Bay Bridge on the


other side of the bridge is the Temporary -Bypass Structure

the column is approximately 68 feet tall ,the columns are hoisted over a steel pipe that is embedded into a drilled hole in the bottom of the footing,the the column is hoisted over the pipe and centered over the pipe by arms that are attached to the pipe

There will be a second lift placed on on this pier,
but the last lift will be done after the bridge is removed


This part of the Temporary Tie-in structure that
will divert traffic around the new Bay Bridge ,after
completion of the new bridge it will be demolished

Most of the rebar in the footings were #18 bars,the footing

weights varied from 580 tons up to almost 700 tons
